NBN Plans for Streaming Without Buffering

A single stream uses only part of your connection, but several streams, downloads and games share the same capacity. Go Easy Fast (NBN 100/20) can suit a few simultaneous streams, while Go Mega Fast (NBN 500/50) gives a busy compatible household more headroom. Actual performance depends on your address, Wi-Fi and other activity.

xBuffering usually happens for three reasons: (1) Your plan speed is too low for the number of simultaneous activities, (2) Wi-Fi issues between your router and device, or (3) Peak hour congestion on lower-tier plans. If you’re on 50/20 and have multiple devices active, consider upgrading. Also check your router placement – walls and distance significantly impact Wi-Fi performance.

Allow roughly 25 Mbps for each 4K stream as a planning guide, then leave room for phones, tablets, games and software updates. Go Easy Fast (NBN 100/20), Go Mega Fast (NBN 500/50) and Go Ultra Troppo (NBN 1000/100) provide increasing headroom where the address supports them.

Live sport and television can be less tolerant of congestion than on-demand video. Choose for all activity happening at once, use Ethernet where practical, and check the plan speeds available at your address.

Yes, significantly. A 5GB movie takes about 30 minutes to download on 25/10, 15 minutes on 50/20, 7 minutes on 100/20, and under 2 minutes on 500/50. If you frequently download content for offline viewing (flights, commutes), faster speeds make a real difference to your preparation time.

The plan speed doesn’t change the maximum quality – that’s set by the streaming service. However, higher speed plans ensure you consistently get the maximum quality. Lower plans might drop to HD or SD during peak hours or when others are online. Higher plans maintain 4K quality reliably.
