NBN Speed for Multiple Streaming Devices

Count the screens likely to stream at the same time, then include gaming, video calls and downloads. Go Easy Fast (NBN 100/20) can suit several lighter streams, while Go Mega Fast (NBN 500/50) or Go Ultra Troppo (NBN 1000/100) give compatible addresses more headroom for many active screens. Wi-Fi quality and the NBN connection at your address also affect performance.

Multiple simultaneous streams consume bandwidth quickly. Each 4K stream needs 25 Mbps, and HD needs 5-8 Mbps. Four HD streams plus phones and tablets can easily exceed a 50 Mbps plan. Upgrading to 100 Mbps or higher gives you the headroom to stream independently without fighting for bandwidth.

Both matter, but differently. NBN speed determines your total available bandwidth. Wi-Fi quality determines how well devices access that bandwidth. If you have excellent NBN but poor Wi-Fi, devices far from the router will struggle. If you have great Wi-Fi but slow NBN, everyone competes for limited bandwidth. We recommend investing in both.

Yes, especially if they’re downloading updates or pre-loading content in the background. Modern smart TVs often download apps and content automatically. With a higher-tier plan like 100/20 Mbps or above, these background activities don’t impact your active viewing or other household usage.

Modern consoles like PlayStation and Xbox are also streaming devices. If someone’s gaming while others stream, you need bandwidth for both. Gaming itself is low bandwidth, but game downloads and updates are huge (50-100GB). A 100/20 Mbps or 500/50Mbps ( Depending on your homes NBN technology ) plan handles gaming plus streaming, with faster plans allowing full-speed downloads without impact.

Most modern routers have QoS (Quality of Service) settings that can prioritise certain devices or activities. You can prioritise video streaming over large downloads, for example. However, the simplest solution is often upgrading to a plan with enough bandwidth that sharing isn’t a problem.
