Static IP Addresses & CGNAT

Need a static IP address? Want to understand CGNAT? Here’s everything you need to know about IP addresses on GoTroppo.

What is CGNAT?

CGNAT (Carrier Grade Network Address Translation) is a technology that allows multiple customers to share a single public IP address. This is how most residential internet connections work by default, including GoTroppo.

With CGNAT (Default)

  • You share a public IP with other customers
  • Your IP address may change over time
  • Perfect for normal internet use (browsing, streaming, gaming)
  • No additional cost

With Static IP

  • You get your own unique public IP address
  • Your IP address never changes
  • Required for hosting servers, VPNs, remote access
  • Available on request

Do I Need a Static IP Address?

Most residential customers don’t need a static IP address. CGNAT works perfectly for:

  • Web browsing and email
  • Streaming (Netflix, Stan, YouTube, etc.)
  • Online gaming (most games work fine behind CGNAT)
  • Video calls (Zoom, Teams, etc.)
  • Social media
  • Smart home devices
  • Working from home (VPN clients usually work fine)

You Might Need a Static IP If:

  • Hosting a server – Web server, game server, media server (Plex), etc.
  • Running a VPN server – To connect back to your home network remotely
  • Remote desktop access – Connecting to your home computer from elsewhere
  • IP-based security cameras – That need remote access via IP
  • Port forwarding – For specific applications that require it
  • Peer-to-peer applications – That need direct connections
  • Some business applications – That require a fixed IP for authentication

CGNAT and Gaming

A common question we get: “Does CGNAT affect gaming?”

For most games, CGNAT works fine. Modern games are designed to work behind NAT. However, you might experience issues with:

  • Voice chat in some older games
  • Hosting game servers for friends to join
  • Strict NAT type warnings (usually doesn’t affect gameplay)

If you’re having specific gaming issues related to CGNAT, contact us and we can discuss your options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a static IP cost extra?

Contact us to discuss pricing for static IP addresses. In many cases, we can accommodate requests at minimal or no additional cost.

Can I switch back to CGNAT after getting a static IP?

Yes, you can switch back at any time. Just contact us and we’ll make the change for you.

What’s the difference between static and dynamic IP?

A static IP never changes – it’s permanently assigned to your connection. A dynamic IP can change over time (though in practice, with CGNAT, it often stays the same for extended periods).

Will a static IP make my internet faster?

No. A static IP doesn’t affect speed – it only affects whether your public IP address changes and whether you can receive incoming connections directly.

Is a static IP more or less secure?

Static IPs can be slightly less secure because they’re easier to target repeatedly. However, with proper firewall configuration on your router, this isn’t a significant concern for most users. CGNAT actually provides an additional layer of protection since your devices aren’t directly accessible from the internet.
