However, if homework involves video calls (online tutoring), uploading assignments, or using cloud-based learning platforms, you’ll want at least 50/20 Mbps. For a stress-free household where nobody has to wait, 100/20 Mbps is ideal.

There’s no hard limit on devices – it depends on what they’re doing. A smart speaker uses almost nothing, while a 4K TV uses 25 Mbps. Typical families have 15-30 connected devices (phones, tablets, TVs, smart home, gaming consoles). Our Go Mega (100/20) comfortably supports 15+ active devices, while 250/100 handles 25+ without issues.

Online gaming itself uses very little bandwidth (1-3 Mbps). The issue is game downloads and updates, which can be 50-100GB. On lower plans, a game download can consume all available bandwidth. With 100/20 Mbps or higher, you can download games while others stream without major impact. Some routers also let you set download schedules for off-peak times.

Multiple video calls are the biggest challenge. Each HD video call needs about 3-4 Mbps up and down. If both parents are on work calls while kids are in online classes, that’s 12-16 Mbps just for calls. Add in screen sharing and you’ll want headroom. We recommend 100/20 Mbps minimum for WFH families, or 250/100 Mbps for peace of mind.
