Going on an Extended Holiday?

Heading overseas or away for an extended period? Here’s what you need to know about your GoTroppo internet service while you’re away.

Your Options

Option 1: Keep It Running

Best for: Holidays up to 1-2 months, or if you have smart home devices

Many customers choose to keep their service running while away because:

  • Smart home devices keep working (security cameras, smart locks, etc.)
  • No reconnection process when you return
  • House sitters or family can use the internet
  • No risk of losing your plan or pricing

Option 2: Cancel & Reconnect Later

Best for: Extended absences of 3+ months

If you’re away for a long time, you may prefer to cancel:

  • Stop paying monthly fees while away
  • No lock-in contracts means no cancellation fees
  • Simply sign up again when you return
  • May need to wait for reconnection (usually same day to 24 hours)

Can I Pause or Suspend My Service?

Unfortunately, NBN services cannot be formally “paused” or “suspended” while maintaining the connection. The NBN network requires an active account to keep your service connected.

Your options are to either keep paying and maintain the service, or cancel and reconnect when you return.

Things to Consider

If You Keep the Service Running:

  • Smart devices: Security cameras, smart doorbells, and other IoT devices will continue working
  • Automatic payments: Make sure your payment method stays valid
  • Security: Your network will still be accessible – ensure you have a strong WiFi password
  • Modem: It’s fine to leave it running (they’re designed to run 24/7)

If You Cancel the Service:

  • Smart devices: These will stop working (no internet connection)
  • Reconnection: When you return, sign up again – it usually takes same day to 24 hours
  • Plan availability: Plans and pricing may change, but we’ll honour any current promotions when you return
  • Keep your modem: If you purchased a GoTroppo modem, keep it – you can use it when you reconnect

Downgrading Instead of Cancelling

Another option is to temporarily downgrade to a cheaper plan while you’re away. This way:

  • You keep your connection active (smart devices work)
  • You pay less per month
  • No reconnection needed when you return
  • Simply upgrade back to your original plan

Before You Leave

Checklist:

  • Ensure your payment method is current and won’t expire while you’re away
  • Update your contact details if they’ll change (temporary phone number, email access)
  • Consider if anyone will need internet access at your home (house sitter, family)
  • Check that security cameras and smart home devices are configured correctly
  • Make sure your WiFi password is secure
